Pianist Johnny O'Neal always brings a party with him when he plays. The native Detroiter, who made his bones working with Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Clark Terry, Lionel Hampton and Art Blakey, has strong roots in the blues and gospel, and he leans heavily on big-beat swing and irrepressible joy.
O'Neal sings, too, and while his raspy voice isn't necessarily pretty by conventional standards, it remains undeniably expressive. He's also an entertainer, a musician who can create the intimacy of a cabaret within a few bars of a well-chosen standard. It's always a pleasure to welcome him home. He'll be joined by bassist Marion Hayden and drummer Sean Dobbins.

Speaking of Dobbins, one of the city's busiest and finest drummers teams with like-minded veterans Tad Weed on piano and Kurt Krahnke on bass to form the trio Dobbins, Krahnke and Weed. It's a flexible band that can go in all kinds of directions within the broad spectrum of the mainstream, swinging lightly, digging deep into a power groove or exploring more aggressive and open post-bop territory. Settling in for a multi-night residency at the Dirty Dog Jazz Café will give the trio ample opportunity to stretch its wings. By the weekend, execution and intuition are likely to be sky high.
