A: Your mattress needs full support under it like a box spring. Otherwise, it will develop dips in between the slats over time. You could actually ruin your mattress by doing this. The only alternative to a box spring would be to screw sheets of 1/2"

How's the quality of IKEA furniture? | Home and Office Furniture ...
I have bought IKEA in the past. Most of the furniture is well built. HOWever I find it is not always comfortable. I am 6’2" and it seem most of the stuff is build for people much shorter.
Now when it comes to the bed the problem is a lot of the stuff is low to the ground which I do not care for. I recommend you stop by the store and try the framing for size and then go to a mattress store and compare prices and options.
One other thing I forgot to mention, we bought a twin size for the daughter a while back and no standard twin sheets fit the darn thing. Seems they use cm not inches back then and the sheets where close but not exact. So recheck the mattress sizing. (in inches)
IKEA has many options from modern (MALM) to more traditional (HEMNES) Stay away from DALSELV, VESTBY, ANEBODA, ASPELUND, and RAMBERG… these are the lower price cheap finish options.
You can certainly find a quality long lasting bed frame in your price range, most likely in the $400 range. The prices are low because you need to assemble it yourself, but beds are one of the easiest things to assemble. They are low to the ground, but you can use a box spring with some frames to raise the mattress up, and some frames are designed so you can adjust the height of the slats which support the mattress. While they may be low to the ground, most frames have room for an under the bed storage box, so they aren’t all *too* low.
