WESTOVER -- Thousands of dollars that were once spent locally by Eastern Correctional Institution apparently are now going to a large industrial supply company rather than to nearby hardware dealers.
As of July 1, a local store owner was told that all purchases must be made through W.W. Grainger Inc., a Lake Forest, Ill.-based Fortune 500 company.
"Naturally, it is going to be detrimental," said Bill Harris, owner of two Ace Hardware stores in Princess Anne and Pocomoke City, which previously supplied ECI with everything from PVC pipe to coolers and charcoal for the annual employee picnic.
Harris declined to say exactly how much business he got from the prison each year, but he said it's irrelevant.
"It doesn't matter if it's a dollar or a million, it's the principle," he said. "They should be supporting the local economy -- period."
State prison officials apparently agree with Harris, and have asked the Department of General Services to waive the requirement for ECI, said Mark Vernarelli, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
