It’s what Bunnings was to hardware, what Ikea was to furniture, what Toys R’Us was to kids stores and what Apple was to electronics: Williams-Sonoma is a game-changer in the retail sector.
As Laura Alber, the company’s president and chief executive says, the company “saw a vision that wasn’t there” in Australia.
The 60-year-old US homewares giant, which operates more than 500 stores around the world, touched down in Australia in early May with its first local first bricks and mortar stores in the Sydney suburb of Bondi Junction.
There are many reasons why Williams-Sonoma and its stablemates Pottery Barn, West Elm and Potter Barn Kids have a cult following before even opening in Australia – the most obvious being Australia is similar to the United States, where the brand has a huge fan base.
But the other obvious reason is – like Apple’s grand opening of its flagship store in Sydney in 2008 or Ikea’s foray into the local market – there’s nothing else in Australia operating on the same playing field in terms of customer service and unique offering,
